We hugged and cried a lot after announcing our retirements: Suresh Raina
August 15, India's 74th Independence Day celebration and also now the day when the nation's most enigmatic captain MS Dhoni retired from international cricket. It was one simple Instagram post, reading, "Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as retired."
Another flamboyant batsman Suresh Raina followed the steps of his former India and current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain. The initial line of his Instagram post made us feel as if he was congratulating MS Dhoni on his glorious career and wishing him luck for his life post-retirement but as we went on reading further, we realized he has joined Dhoni in retirement.
"It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781. With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you on this journey. Thank you, India. Jai Hind!" read Suresh Raina's post.
The former UP batsman has now revealed what happened before and after the massive calls were taken. Suresh Raina said that he along with Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla and Deepak Chahar reached Ranchi on August 14 in a chartered flight. MS Dhoni and Monu Singh joined them in their journey to Chennai, where the entire CSK squad has been asked to assemble.
Suresh Raina added that he knew that MS Dhoni was going to retire after reaching Chennai and so he had prepared himself as well. The 33-year-old added that after announcing their retirements they hugged, cried, and partied in the night.
"I knew Dhoni would announce his retirement upon reaching Chennai, so I was ready. I, Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar, and Karn Sharma reached Ranchi on 14th with the chartered plane and picked up Mahi Bhai and Monu Singh.
“After announcing our retirement, we hugged and cried a lot. I, Piyush, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, and Karn sat together after that, talked about our careers and our relationship. We partied during the night. Everyone has to go one day. We don't want anything but only respect” Suresh Raina told Dainik Jagran.
Further, Suresh Raina also explained the reason why the duo decided to end their international careers on August 15. MS Dhoni's India jersey number 7 and Raina's jersey number 3 played a role in it.
"We had made up our minds to retire on August 15. Mahi Bhai’s jersey number is 7 and mine is 3 and put it together and it makes 73. And on Saturday, our country completed 73 years of independence, so there couldn't have been a better day,” Suresh Raina told Dainik Jagran.
MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina will be seen playing in the IPL 2020, which starts from September 19 in UAE.
