Veteran actor and singer Pappukutty Bhagavathar dies at 107 in Kerala
Veteran actor and singer Pappukutty Bhagavathar, who is fondly called Kerala Saigal, breathed his last on Monday (June 22) night, at his residence in Kochi, Kerala.
According to reports, he was suffering from age-related illness for the past few weeks.
Aged 107, the veteran actor was part of more than 25 hit Malayalam films. He played crucial characters in films like Viruthan Shanku, Kaattukurangu, Padicha Kallan, Vilakuranja Manushyar and shot to fame as a singer in the year 2009.
His song Entadukke Vannadukkum from the film Marykkundoru Kunjaadu became a huge hit among the audience. He was a successful theatre artiste and had staged over ten thousand plays in Kerala.
Many celebrities from the Malayalam film industry expressed grief over his demise. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan mourned the death of the veteran artist.
“He came as a child artist in Malayalam cinema, later was an active figure as an actor and singer for over seven decades in the field of both cinema and theatre. His contributions will always be remembered by the cultural Kerala (sic),” Pinarayi Vijayan said in an official statement.
Born in 1913, Pappukutty Bhagavathar was the second child of Michael and Anna. His wife Baby died in 2017.
