Very happy that my daughter will finally get justice, says Nirbhaya's mother
After the Supreme Court dismissed the petition of death row convict Pawan Gupta against rejection of his mercy plea by the President and seeking stay on execution, Nirbhaya's mother said, "I am very happy with the Supreme Court's decisions. Finally, the women and daughters of this country and Nirbhaya have got justice."
Pawan Gupta is one of the four convicts who is scheduled to be hanged at 5.30 am today for raping and savagely assaulting a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16, 2012. The other three convicts are Akshay Kumar, Mukesh Singh and Vinay Sharma. The victim, who came to be known as 'Nirbhaya' (fearless), died after a fortnight of the incident.
Six people, including the four convicts and a juvenile, were named as accused in the heinous crime. Ram Singh, the sixth accused, allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail days after the trial began in the case.
The juvenile was released in 2015 after spending three years in a correctional home.
