Thalaivi: Kangana Ranaut's biopic on Jayalalithaa to release in theatres first, not OTT
Director AL Vijay's Thalaivi, the biopic on the life of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa, is one of the most-anticipated films in Tamil cinema. Featuring Kangana Ranaut in the lead, the shoot is currently on a halt due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
The latest buzz in the industry is that the online streaming rights of the film has been sold to one of the popular OTT giants and it might skip theatrical release.
However, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to clarify it as rumours. He said that the film will release in the theatres first and not OTT. His tweet read, "IMPORTANT... News that #Thalavi - #Jayalalithaa biopic - will premiere on #OTT is FALSE... Will release in theatres first... Digital release to follow *after* theatrical release...#Thalaivi stars #KanganaRanuat (sic)."

In February, on the occasion of Jayalalithaa's birth anniversary, the makers unveiled Kangana's look from the film and announced that Thalaivi will hit the screens on June 26, 2020.
However, due to Covid-19 crisis, the makers couldn't complete the film on time and have now decided to postpone the release date.
Thalaivi features Arvind Swami in the role of late actor-politician MG Ramachandran aka MGR. The film also marks Kangana’s return to Tamil cinema after a gap of 12 years, after working on Dhaam Dhoom with Jayam Ravi.
