Tamil Nadu: Municipal Commissioner throws away vendors’ fruits, veggies for flouting lockdown norms
A video of Vaniyambadi Municipal Commissioner Cicil Thomas throwing away fruits and vegetables of street-side vendors who he said opened their shops without proper precautions went viral on social media.
In the video of the incident, which reportedly took place on Tuesday, the official is seen picking up fruit, vegetables and other commodities from roadside outlets and throwing them away.
After social media outrage over the incident, however, Vaniyambadi Municipal Commissioner Cicil Thomas on Wednesday went to the market and apologised to vendors.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, the municipal commissioner said there were multiple warnings and requests that were put forward to street vendors but they had not been following social distancing norms. “They were asked to move out multiple times. We were worried that a Koyembedu-like cluster will develop here,” the municipal commissioner said.
As he apologised, Cicil Thomas added that the people will also have to understand what officials are doing is for their well-being.
