Six people arrested in connection with Tarn Taran Blast case

The Tarn Taran police have arrested six more suspects in connection with the powerful explosion which took place near Kaler village on Khadur Sahib Link Road on September 4.

The arrested suspects belong to Gurdaspur, Patti, and Amritsar and were being interrogated.

The explosion which took place around 7.45 pm in an agriculture field has left the security agencies baffled. Two youth in their twenties were killed and another was seriously injured. The injured, identified as Gurjant, has been admitted to a hospital and is still not in a position to give a statement to the police.

His statement can provide important leads to the blast case that took place in a highly sensitive border district of Tarn Taran.

Besides the state police, the case is also being investigated by the NIA and other agencies. The post-blast investigation team of national security guards also visited the explosion site.

The police had found two pits in the agriculture field where the explosion took place.

Police sources said the youth in their 20s were trying to dig fields when the explosion took place.

Though the police officials are tight-lipped about the findings, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that the accused were trying to make a bomb in a bottle which exploded due to a chemical reaction.

Sources privy to the information said interrogation of 32 people has provided important leads about the motive behind the explosion.

“The accused wanted to cause a blast at a public place. The investigation is on to find out who these people were working for”, a senior police official not wanting to be named said.

Sources also said the police suspect the hand of ISI and Khalistani terror groups in the explosion. Traces of foreign funding have also been found.

It is worth mentioning that Tarn Taran district was a hotbed for terror activities during the Khalistan militancy days.

Police was also trying to find out whether this blast has any link with November 18, 2018, Amritsar grenade attack in which three followers of Nirankari sect were killed and 19 others were injured. The terror attack was one of the desperate bids to revive terrorism in Punjab.

Some minister Amit Shah’s comments, in which he pitched for making Hindi a common language in the country, has re-ignited the debate on ‘Hindi imposition’ with political leaders, particularly those from the south, warning the government against any move to make Hindi a common language in the country.

As a political slugfest erupted over the matter, Minister of State Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to share an old video in which Congress leader P Chidambaram is heard saying that he hopes efforts to make Hindi as the country’s language would continue.

Rijiju’s tweet came a day after the Congress reacted to Amit Shah’s statement by warning the government against stirring up controversies over “emotive and sensitive issues” and against tinkering with the three-language formula.

Meanwhile, voices of dissent came in from the Bharatiya Janata Party itself with Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa tweeting that for his state “Kannada is the principal language”. “We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture,” Yediyurappa also said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Wednesday, state secretariat sources confirmed on Monday.

Mamata Banerjee will be leaving for New Delhi on Tuesday, he confirmed, the sources said.

The two leaders likely to hold discussions on administrative issues of West Bengal at the meeting, he added.

Mamata Banerjee has been one of the harshest critics of BJP and PM Narendra Modi.

“An appointment was sought by the chief minister’s office last week for an appointment from PM Narendra Modi’s office for the meeting. It will take place in New Delhi on Wednesday,” the official said.

The proposed meeting assumes significance as it will be held at a time when several leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress and former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar are under CBI scanner in connection with the Saradha ponzi scam.

The Saradha group of companies had allegedly duped lakhs of people to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, promising higher rates of returns on their investments.

The last time the two leaders had met was at the convocation ceremony at Visva Bharati University held in Shantiniketan on May 25, 2018.
