Shahrukh Khan as the biggest challenger of US Monopoly in Fathima Bhutto’s book

Published

on

There is a vast cultural movement emerging from the Global South and sweeping all before it. India’s Shah Rukh Khan, after all, is the most popular actor in the world. Bollywood, Turkish soap operas called dizi, K-pop and other aspects of Eastern pop culture are international in their range and allure and the biggest challenger yet to America’s monopoly since the end of World War II.

Bestselling author Fatima Bhutto’s new book is about these new kings of popular entertainment in the twenty-first century. Carefully packaging not always secular modernity with traditional values in urbanized settings, they have created a new global mass culture that can be easily consumed, especially by the many millions coming late to the modern world and still negotiating its overwhelming challenges. Though this is a book primarily focused on India, it also explores the cultural industries of two other countries at the forefront of the challenge to American soft power: Turkey and South Korea. Plummeting American prestige, the belated rediscovery that local cultures are valuable in and of themselves and the rise of classes with different tastes and backgrounds emerging out of the turbulence and migration of globalization have marginalized the old guard of “Westoxified” elites and created a vast new landscape of cultural power. Indian, Turkish and even Korean mass cultures offer a much better fit for this majority’s self-image and aspirations of sovereignty and dignity.

Fatima Bhutto brings her thesis alive through exclusive interviews with Shah Rukh Khan, a behind-the-scenes-account of Magnificent Century, Turkey’s biggest TV show, watched by upwards of 200 million people across 43 countries and her travels to South Korea to see how K-Pop transformed the world of popular music and “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video to be viewed one billion times.

The trailer of Bigil, starring Vijay, has just hit the web. Directed by Atlee, the film is a sports drama, which revolves around the women’s football team that has been coached by Vijay’s character. Nayanthara plays a crucial role in the film. The first look, songs, and posters of the film created quite a hype.

Vijay is seen in two avatars in the film, one as a young man sporting a jersey with the name ‘Michael’ written on it, who later coaches the girls team, and the other as Rayappan, who seems to be a local don. Michael is also known as Bigil. The trailer is interspersed with several shots of girls training on the pitch, as well as the anger and resentment towards Michael off the pitch. The older don has some whistle-worthy lines as well.

After 2 years Farhan Akthar breaks silence over his divorce

Published

on

Farhan Akhtar and wife Adhuna Bhabani took everyone by shock when they decided to split a few years ago. After spending years together, the director filed for divorce from Adhuna. But the two have maintained cordial relationship ever since. Not just that, Farhan has also moved on in life and is currently in a happy space. He’s dating Shibani Dandekar and the two lovebirds are extremely happy together.

Farhan has always avoided the question of his divorce. But recently when we chatted up with him, close on the heels of his next release The Sky Is Pink, where his character also goes through a separation before they get back together stronger, he opened up for the first time and gave a very practical answer.

When asked if it was difficult for him to break the news to his kids, he told us, “Nothing is easy. Anything you tell your child which you think your child doesn’t want to hear is never going to be easy. The thing that your child expects you and by you doing it, you will realize that this is what you expect from them. If you can be honest with your child, they are not dumb or stupid. They understand way more than you and I can imagine. They have a sense of energy about how their parents are feeling. As long as you don’t lie to them and you feel ‘it’s okay, I have told them, they can now do whatever’, things will come around. Eventually, a child will understand why you have done what you have done. Maybe not at the moment, but you just have to be honest with them and in turn, they will be honest with you.”
