Section 144 imposed in Guntur amid tension in the state: TDP Naidu Vs YSRCP Reddy

Telugu Desam Party Chief and Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been put under house arrest.

Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh has also been placed under house arrest.

The preventive detention has been done to stop them from participating in a major protest against the state government run by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

TDP planned a “Chalo Atmakur rally” in Guntur to protest what they claimed had been political violence by the state government.

TDP alleged that eight party workers had been killed and several face threats from the state’s ruling YSR Congress Party. YSRCP came to power in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly polls in May.

Some of the other TDP leaders including former state minister Bhuma Akhila Priya, Member of Legislative Council (MLC) YVB Rajendra Prasad and former TDP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Tangirala Sowmya have also been taken into preventive detention, news agency ANI has reported.

Tensions were simmering in Guntur where police had imposed Section 144 in Palanadu area since September 10.

Naidu has called for a 12-hour hunger strike across the state. TDP cadre is expected to participate as well. This happened after the police did not allow TDP workers to protest.

In a bid to counter TDP’s rally, YSRCP’s local MLAs Ambati Rambabu and A Ramakrishna Reddy had also announced a march in Atmakur to highlight alleged attacks on their party workers during the previous dispensation.

Some minister Amit Shah’s comments, in which he pitched for making Hindi a common language in the country, has re-ignited the debate on ‘Hindi imposition’ with political leaders, particularly those from the south, warning the government against any move to make Hindi a common language in the country.

As a political slugfest erupted over the matter, Minister of State Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to share an old video in which Congress leader P Chidambaram is heard saying that he hopes efforts to make Hindi as the country’s language would continue.

Rijiju’s tweet came a day after the Congress reacted to Amit Shah’s statement by warning the government against stirring up controversies over “emotive and sensitive issues” and against tinkering with the three-language formula.

Meanwhile, voices of dissent came in from the Bharatiya Janata Party itself with Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa tweeting that for his state “Kannada is the principal language”. “We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture,” Yediyurappa also said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Wednesday, state secretariat sources confirmed on Monday.

Mamata Banerjee will be leaving for New Delhi on Tuesday, he confirmed, the sources said.

The two leaders likely to hold discussions on administrative issues of West Bengal at the meeting, he added.

Mamata Banerjee has been one of the harshest critics of BJP and PM Narendra Modi.

“An appointment was sought by the chief minister’s office last week for an appointment from PM Narendra Modi’s office for the meeting. It will take place in New Delhi on Wednesday,” the official said.

The proposed meeting assumes significance as it will be held at a time when several leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress and former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar are under CBI scanner in connection with the Saradha ponzi scam.

The Saradha group of companies had allegedly duped lakhs of people to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, promising higher rates of returns on their investments.

The last time the two leaders had met was at the convocation ceremony at Visva Bharati University held in Shantiniketan on May 25, 2018.
