SC to hear PIL on mass evacuation of migrant workers today
The Supreme Court is expected to hear an urgent plea on mass exodus on migrant workers today amid the chaos observed over the past few days. Many migrant labourers who have been forced to flee urban areas where they were employed are now scrambling to return to their villages. Though the Centre and states have announced adequate bus availability, many of these labourers have been forced to walk hundreds of kilometres due to either unavailability of buses or they cannot afford it.
Some of these labourers have even died during the mass exodus due to various reasons. Those fortunate enough to find commute were forced to travel in cramped up and overloaded buses, exposing them to the risk of contracting the virus.
The petition, filed by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, seeks to provide shelter, food and medical aid to the workers who are fleeing from urban areas across the country.
