Rajinikanth on Tuticorin custodial deaths: Shocked beyond belief, police should be punished

The custodial deaths of father-son duo Jeyaraj and Beniks in Tuticorin have caused a huge uproar across the country. Many celebrities in India took to social media to condemn police brutality and demanded justice for the victim's family. Today (July 1), Superstar Rajinikanth took to Twitter to express his anger over the incident.

The Darbar actor shared a photo of himself and wrote that the police officials who tortured them should be punished. His statement in Tamil is loosely translated as, "The entire human race condemned the barbaric act of the police who tortured and killed the father and son. I was shocked beyond belief when I heard how a few police officials behaved with the magistrate. The guilty must be punished and should not be spared."

Last week, Rajinikanth spoke to Jeyaraj's wife J Selvarani and offered his heartfelt condolences to his family. On June 28, the actor's publicist Riaz Ahmed took to social media to confirm the same and added that the actor spoke to them over a phone call.

Jeyaraj and his son Beniks were tortured by the cops in Sathankulam police station in Tuticorin. The medical report suggested that the duo had severe injuries on the gluteal region. While Beniks died at the Kovilpatti General Hospital on June 22, his father Jeyaraj breathed his last on June 23.

The Judicial Magistrate Bharathidasan, who is probing the case, said that the cops in the police station misbehaved with him during investigation. He said, "I was not greeted or saluted to when I came to the police station. D Kumar was rather showing a body language which was an attempt to showcase his physical strength, with an attempt to intimidate us. He was also instructing his subordinates in a tone somewhat used to threaten."
