Railways subsidised ticket fare for migrant labourers, states can pay rest, BJP tells Rahul Gandhi
Soon after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Modi government and Indian Railways for asking state governments to collect ticket fare from stranded migrant labourers, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the states have been asked to pay only 15% of the fare.
In a tweet, Sambit Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi ji, I have attached guidelines of MHA which clearly states that “No tickets to be sold at any station”. Railways has subsidised 85% & State govt to pay 15%. The State govt can pay for the tickets (Madhya Pradesh’s BJP govt is paying). Ask Cong state govts to follow suit”.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi said, “On one hand the Railways is extorting ticket fare from labourers stranded in different states, on the other hand the Rail Ministry is depositing donations of Rs 151 crore in PM Cares fund.” He added, “Please solve this puzzle.”
The Modi government had announced Shramik Special trains to transport stranded migrant labourers to their home states amid the lockdown.
However, the Indian Railways issued a set of guidelines for the state governments and said the administrations must collect ticket fare from the migrants travelling in these trains.
Sambit Patra has said this price is only 15% of the total fare and the state governments are free to pay it on behalf of the migrant labourers.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said state units of the party will pay for the ticket fare of the migrant labourers who are unable to pay for themselves.
