Rahul Gandhi questions timing of letter, accuses dissenters in party of colluding with BJP
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday questioned the timing of demand for a change in party leadership at the crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting and accused dissenting groups within the party of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Taking a tough stand on the leaked letter demanding a change party’s organizational structure including a new president, Gandhi reprimanded the ‘dissenters’ at the CWC meeting and said he is “deeply hurt”.
During the crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Gandhi asked, “Why was the letter (over party leadership) sent at a time when Sonia Gandhi was admitted in the hospital?”
The senior Congress leaders comment comes at a time when the party finds itself in the midst of a growing internal crisis.
The letter Rahul Gandhi spoke about was reportedly written by 23 Congress leaders and addressed to the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi. In the letter, the leaders demanded a change in Congress leadership including a shift in the party’s internal organizational structure.
Soon after the CWC meeting began, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi offered to resign as party chief and asked the party’s workers to start the process to find a new president.
While some leaders like Manmohan Singh and AK Antony urged Sonia Gandhi to continue as party chief, some other leaders asked Rahul Gandhi to take over as part chief. Gandhi had resigned as the president of the Congress party after the party’s humiliating loss in the 2019 general elections.
