Ponniyin Selvan will be made in two parts, confirms Mani Ratnam
Director Mani Ratnam is presently working on his epic period flick, Ponniyin Selvan. The film is based on the Tamil literary novel of the same name, written by Kalki Krishnamoorthy. In a recent Instagram live session, Mani Ratnam spilled the beans about Ponniyin Selvan.
A fan asked him if he would come up with a sequel to any of his films. The filmmaker answered, "I am making my upcoming film Ponniyin Selvan in two parts." According to sources close to the team, the film will be shot in one go. The team has planned to wrap up the shoot by the end of this year.
Another fan asked Mani if he is interested in acting in films. His actress-wife Suhasini quickly revealed that Rajinikanth's daughter had the same question. Mani Ratnam remarked, "I said no because if I act in films and come back to the direction, my actors would say, 'I saw your acting the other day.' Now, I can pretend that I know everything and extract work from them."
During the live session, Mani Ratnam also disclosed that he is not interested in directing web series for OTT platforms. "Imagine I have been playing tennis for 20 years and you suddenly ask me to play football. It's like that for me. Why would I do something that I don't know? It's better if I continue in a medium that I know about," he told the viewers.
Ponniyin Selvan has been Mani Ratnam's dream project for several years. After multiple failed attempts, the film finally went on floors early this year, after Lyca Productions came on board.
The period film boasts of an ensemble cast comprising Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Sobhita Dhulipala and Aishwarya Lekshmi in significant roles. Ponniyin Selvan has music scored by AR Rahman.
