Who says face masks have to be boring and plain? From prints, embroidery, and slogans, people across the country are wearing a variety of face masks in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Now, to up the game, a Coimbatore-based goldsmith has introduced gold and silver face masks in the market.
Yes, you heard that right. Gold and silver strings are used to make such face masks. Moreover, this is not just a mask but also a prized accessory.
Radhakrishna Sundaram Acharya has been in the jewelry industry for 35 years now and has always strived at excelling in his field of work. He has made waistcoats, turbans, and jackets using gold, and now with the pandemic at large, and masks turning into essentials, Radhakrishna has introduced gold and silver masks.
"We made these masks as a part of corona awareness. It is as flexible as cloth. You can wear it as a regular mask. It is a four-layer mask. Three layers are that of cloth and one is of metal, which is either gold or silver," Radhakrishna said.
It takes him a week to make one mask. The metal wire is made at a thickness of 0.06mm. Then, it is made into a mesh. Post which, he weaves and stitches the mask manually.
For silver masks, around 40 grams of sterling silver are used and it costs approximately Rs 15,000. About 46.5 grams of gold is used to make yellow metal masks and it costs approximately Rs 2.75 lakh.
Radhakrishna is already getting orders and is customizing a few masks for his clients. He said that the masks can be worn to functions as well.
