Odisha registers highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases

Odisha registered its highest spike in COVID-19 cases in a day as 20 more persons tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, Odisha Health Department informed.

The sudden surge of Covid-19 positive cases is related to migrants workers who are returning to the state. They are mostly textile mills workers and plumbers from Surat in Gujarat. Gujarat is the second-worst affected state in terms of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

The sudden surge in positive cases is a matter of concern for state administration as Covid-19 cases may increase significantly when more migrants arrive in the state.

Out of the 20 fresh cases, 17 are from Ganjam and 3 from Mayurbhanj. All 20 men who tested positive have been identified as Surat returnees.

The state’s tally of coronavirus positive cases reached 206 with the fresh addition. Odisha has a total number of 143 active cases while 61 recovered after testing positive. The state has so far recorded two deaths.

“Ganjam district is now in the red zone due to very high doubling rate,” a notification issued by the state health and family welfare department said.

Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur have been categorised as an orange zone with four Covid-19 cases in each district.
