MS Dhoni showed me correct picture, told me 'selectors not looking at you for 2019 World Cup': Yuvraj Singh
Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has revealed that MS Dhoni was the captain who showed him the "correct picture" regarding his future in the Indian team before the 2019 World Cup.
India exited the 2019 World Cup in England after losing in the semi-finals against New Zealand. It was the final match that Dhoni played for India before taking an indefinite sabbatical from international cricket while Yuvraj retired from the sport during the tournament.
Yuvraj Singh played three 50-over ICC World Cups - 2003, 2007 & 2011 - and was the Player of the Tournament in India's victorious campaign at home 9 years ago. He played while suffering from cancer during the showpiece event and helped India lift the trophy after 28 years on April 2.
After the World Cup, Yuvraj was diagnosed with a rare germ cell cancer in his lungs for which he needed chemotherapy treatment in Boston. Most of the cricketing fraternity thought it was the end of Yuvi's career but he made a successful comeback in the national team just a few months later.
But Yuvraj admitted that the game changed after his comeback and praised current captain Virat Kohli for supporting him in the final stage of his career.
He wasn't the same cricketer after his return but still managed to play decently well for 5 years before he was dropped from the side in 2017. Two years later Yuvraj eventually announced his retirement after falling out of favor with the selectors and team management due to his inconsistent run.
He missed the 2015 and 2019 fifty-over World Cups during this challenging phase of his career despite not doing too badly in the blue jersey. Yuvraj even managed to post his highest individual score - 150 vs England in Cuttack - in ODIs just before being sidelined by the selectors for good.
“When I made my comeback, Virat Kohli supported me. Had he not backed me then I wouldn’t have made a comeback.
"But then it was Dhoni who showed me the correct picture about the 2019 World Cup that selectors are not looking at you,” Yuvraj told News18. “He showed me the real picture. He gave me clarity. He did as much as he could,” Yuvraj told News18.
“Till the 2011 World Cup, MS had a lot of confidence in me and used to tell me that ‘you are my main player’. But after coming back from illness the game changed and a lot of changes happened in the team.
"So as far as the 2015 World Cup is concerned, you can’t really pinpoint at something. So this is a very personal call. I understood that as a captain sometimes you can’t justify everything because at the end of the day you have to see how the country performs,” Yuvraj said.
