Jyotika's Ponmagal Vandhal to skip theatrical release, will have its digital premiere in May
Jyotika's upcoming film, Ponmagal Vandhal, directed by JJ Fredrick, was scheduled to hit the theatres on March 27. However, due to the lockdown imposed by the government, the film could not see the light of the day. The latest development is that Ponmagal Vandhal will have its digital premiere in May.
On April 24, social media was abuzz with reports that the streaming rights of Ponmagal Vandhal have been secured by Amazon Prime. According to reports, the film will stream from the first week of May. With this, Ponmagal Vandhal becomes the first film to have a direct OTT release in the history of Tamil cinema.
Following the news, the film's production house, Suriya's 2D Entertainment is facing the wrath of the Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. R Paneer Selvam, the general secretary of the association released a video in which he is opposing 2D Entertainment's decision to not release Ponmagal Vandhal in theatres.
He said, "Seeing the news reports of Ponmagal Vandhal's release in digital platforms shocked the Theatre and Multiples Owners Association. It pains to know that the film will not release in theatres. We have a rule that the films which are made for big screens should release in theatres first followed by a digital release. We condemn the producer who has decided to sell the streaming rights. We contacted Suriya and requested him to not release the film in OTT platforms, but it fell on deaf ears. So, we have decided to not release any film involving Suriya or his production house."
