J&K senior cop slams Shah Faesal says he is a leader, can't sell hopelessness

Jammu and Kashmir’s senior police officer Imtiyaz Hussain slammed bureaucrat-turned-politician Shah Faesal after he criticized the government for abrogating the provisions under Article 370. Hussian charged Faesal with spreading “hopelessness” instead of accepting “new realities” of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I admire @shahfaesalfor his sheer brilliance & articulation. Being a leader he can’t sell hopelessness. History never has one version only. He’ll have to accept the new realities & lead us to realize the dreams of this generation of Kashmiris which our country promises,” Hussain tweeted.

In an interview to international media, Faesal launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government accusing it of murdering the constitution in broad daylight. He said that the way the provisions of Article 370 was abrogated, was unconstitutional.

“Today what has been done, is by resorting to complete illegality by completely murdering the Constitution in the house of people of this country,” he said.

Article 370 earlier accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir. On August 5, the government issued a fresh Presidential Order withdrawing special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The charge against Faesal came after he was stopped from taking a flight to Istanbul at the Delhi airport during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. He was flown back to Srinagar where he was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The former bureaucrat from Jammu and Kashmir had floated the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement party following his resignation from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

Some minister Amit Shah’s comments, in which he pitched for making Hindi a common language in the country, has re-ignited the debate on ‘Hindi imposition’ with political leaders, particularly those from the south, warning the government against any move to make Hindi a common language in the country.

As a political slugfest erupted over the matter, Minister of State Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to share an old video in which Congress leader P Chidambaram is heard saying that he hopes efforts to make Hindi as the country’s language would continue.

Rijiju’s tweet came a day after the Congress reacted to Amit Shah’s statement by warning the government against stirring up controversies over “emotive and sensitive issues” and against tinkering with the three-language formula.

Meanwhile, voices of dissent came in from the Bharatiya Janata Party itself with Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa tweeting that for his state “Kannada is the principal language”. “We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture,” Yediyurappa also said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Wednesday, state secretariat sources confirmed on Monday.

Mamata Banerjee will be leaving for New Delhi on Tuesday, he confirmed, the sources said.

The two leaders likely to hold discussions on administrative issues of West Bengal at the meeting, he added.

Mamata Banerjee has been one of the harshest critics of BJP and PM Narendra Modi.

“An appointment was sought by the chief minister’s office last week for an appointment from PM Narendra Modi’s office for the meeting. It will take place in New Delhi on Wednesday,” the official said.

The proposed meeting assumes significance as it will be held at a time when several leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress and former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar are under CBI scanner in connection with the Saradha ponzi scam.

The Saradha group of companies had allegedly duped lakhs of people to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, promising higher rates of returns on their investments.

The last time the two leaders had met was at the convocation ceremony at Visva Bharati University held in Shantiniketan on May 25, 2018.
