Jayasurya's Sufiyum Sujatayum to have its digital premiere on July 3
Jayasurya's upcoming Malayalam film, Sufiyum Sujatayum, directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas, was supposed to release in theatres first. However, due to uncertainty over the reopening of cinema halls in this pandemic crisis, the makers have decided to release the film directly on OTT.
The online streaming rights of the film have been secured by Amazon Prime Video and the film will have its worldwide premiere on July 3. With this, Sufiyum Sujatayum becomes the first film to have a direct OTT release in the history of Malayalam film.
The film is bankrolled by Vijay Babu under his production banner Friday Film House. Touted to be a musical love story, the film also marks the comeback of Aditi Rao Hydari to Malayalam cinema after almost 14 years. She made her debut in Malayalam with a film titled Prajapathi that had Mammootty in the lead.
Sufiyum Sujatayum has been shot by cinematographer Anu Moothedath and edited by Deepu Joseph. M Jayachandran has composed music for the film.
Recently, two mainstream Tamil films - Jyotika's Ponmagal Vandhal and Keerthy Suresh's Penguin had direct OTT release and garnered decent reviews from the audience as well as the critics.
Though Kerala has seen a decline in the cases of the novel coronavirus, its highly unlikely for the government to reopen theatres anytime soon. There are reports that many producers in Kerala are considering going the OTT way.
