India's case tally crosses 1.12 lakh with 11,220 new cases in 48 hours
India has reported more than 5,600 new Covid-19 cases for the second consecutive day. In the last 24 hours, 5,611 cases were reported in the country, taking the overall case tally to 1,12,359.
In its latest bulletin on the Covid-19 situation in the country, the Union health ministry said a total of 3,435 people have died due to Covid-19 in India so far, while 45,300 have recovered.
Maharashtra continues to the worst-hit state in India. It now has 39,297 cases, 10,318 recoveries and 1,390 deaths.
The state is followed by Tamil Nadu (13,191 cases), Gujarat (12,537 cases) and Delhi (11,088 cases).
As per the health ministry data, Maharashtra is only state to have more than 15,000 cases. There are three states (Delhi, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu) where the case tally ranges between 10,000 and 15,000.
Besides this, 11 states have cases ranging between 1,000 and 10,000.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday the Union health ministry said the recovery rate among those having tested positive for Covid-19 has risen to nearly 40 per cent, from about 7 per cent before the lockdown began on March 25. It also said that hospital support was needed by less than seven per cent patients.
During a press briefing on the Covid-19 situation, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said the current recovery rate stands at 39.62 per cent while it was 7.1 per cent at the beginning of lockdown.
The nationwide lockdown was initially imposed for a 21-day period till April 14, but later got extended till May 3 in the second phase and then for another 14-day third phase till May 17. A two-week-long fourth phase is now underway till May 31, but with several restrictions having been relaxed to boost economic activities.
