India sees one-day spike of 78,357 new coronavirus cases, tally crosses 37 lakh

India recorded a single-day spike of 78,357 new coronavirus cases and 1,045 deaths in the last 24 hours -- the Union health ministry revealed in its latest update Wednesday morning.

With 78,357 new infections, the coronavirus cases tally in India has now mounted to 37,69,524. There are a total of 8,01,282 active cases and 29,019,09 cured/discharged/migrated cases in the country as on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the death toll in India topped 66,333 with the country registering 1,045 more deaths due to the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

Till Tuesday evening, Maharashtra had reported 15,765 fresh cases, taking the state's coronavirus case tally to 8,08,306. The total number of active cases in the state now stands at 1,98,523, and recovered cases at 5,84,537, respectively. The recovery rate in Maharashtra is 72.32 percent, and the death toll is 24,903, said the state government on Tuesday.

Delhi reported 2,312 fresh coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the city's highest single-day spike in nearly two months, said the authorities. At least 1,050 people were discharged, and 18 deaths were reported on Tuesday. The total number of cases stands at 1,77,060 including 1,56,728 recovered or discharged or migrated cases; total 15,870 active cases and 4,462 deaths so far.

In Uttar Pradesh, 5,571 fresh coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday, pushing the tally to 2,35,757, and active cases to 55,538.

Sikkim reported 18 more cases, taking the Himalayan state's tally to 1,670, an official said on Tuesday.

India has become the world's third most affected country by the novel coronavirus pandemic after the United States and Brazil.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), India reported the newest Covid-19 cases of any country in the past week, its nearly half a million fresh infections pushing the global tally up by 1 percent.
