India registers 29,429 Covid cases, 582 deaths in 24 hours
India has once again recorded over 29,000 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total case count in the country to 9,36,181.
The country recorded 29,429 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 582 deaths in one of the biggest single-day spikes recorded in the country. There are 3,19,840 active cases in India at the moment while nearly six lakh patients have been discharged after recovery.
The number of people who have died due to coronavirus in India stands at 24,309, according to the latest update provided by the Union health ministry.
Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with over one lakh active cases; it has recorded over 2,67,000 coronavirus cases since the pandemic first emerged in India. Over 10,600 people have succumbed to the virus in the state.
In comparison, the number of active cases is declining in Delhi. The national capital currently has 18,864 active cases and over 93,000 people have recovered after getting infected. The death toll due to the virus in Delhi is 54 less than 3,500.
Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, is witnessing a surge in the number of new cases. The state has close to 48,000 active cases while 97,310 people have recovered. There have been 2099 deaths in Tamil Nadu due to the virus.
The number of active cases is also declining in West Bengal after a sharp spike a few days ago. Karnataka, however, is witnessing a fresh surge in cases and there are over 25,000 active cases in the state.
Many states have reimposed strict lockdowns in the wake of rising infections while some are now aiming at local lockdowns in high risks cities and containment zones. It now remains to be seen whether these local lockdowns help in bringing down infections.
