After days of reporting close to 10,000 cases, India on Friday recorded 10,956 fresh coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours pushing the country's Covid-19 tally to 297,535. The death toll in India due to the novel coronavirus has also mounted by 396 casualties in the last 24 hours.
According to the health ministry, India's death toll now stands at 8,498. The total number of cases in the country -- 297,535 till Friday 9:30 am -- includes 141,842 active cases, and 147,195 cured/discharged/migrated, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
The number of recoveries remained more than the active cases for the third consecutive day. The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners.
With the new number of infections recorded in the past 24 hours, India has surpassed the United Kingdom to claim the fourth spot in the list of countries with the most number of coronavirus cases in the world.
India is now only behind the United States (2,022,488 Covid-19 cases), Brazil (802,828), and Russia (501,800).
Meanwhile, the Central government said on Friday that India is doing "pretty well" in its fight against the coronavirus and will "win this war" and asserted that though the country adopted the same principles that China did to contain coronavirus spread, its experience was different as the disease came through travel and affected multiple points.
The virus has the nature of travelling very rapidly and it catches every susceptible person if it can, but India will not allow the will of the virus to run across this country, Chairman of Empowered Group One and Niti Aayog member Dr V K Paul asserted.
