After Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw posted the tweet, several people wished her speedy recovery. "So sorry to hear this, Kiran Shaw. We need your hale & hearty soon! Be well my friend," wrote Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw's Bengaluru-based biopharmaceutical company Biocon has been working on repurposing a psoriasis drug called Itolizumab as a potential treatment for Covid-19. Last month, the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) gave its approval to Itolizumab, a drug used to cure skin ailment psoriasis, for "restricted emergency use" to treat coronavirus patients.
However, Itolizumab ran into controversy after it was found that it was given regulatory approval for Covid-19 treatment on the basis of clinical trials on only 30 patients across four centers. Later, the National Task Force on Covid-19 decided against including Itolizumab drug in clinical management protocols for treating the disease despite DGCA approval. Mazumdar-Shaw is among a group of high profile individuals in Bengaluru who have tested positive for coronavirus in recent days.
Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa, Health Minister Sriramulu, and at least two other cabinet ministers, as well as former CM Siddaramaiah, tested coronavirus positive recently.
