Govt on SDRF assistance for Covid-19: Rs 4 lac ex-gratia for kin of victims
The government says it will treat India's growing outbreak of the new coronavirus disease, Covid-19, as a notified disaster for the providing purpose of assistance under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
It listed assistance norms in a release published today, and said Rs 4 lakh would be paid to the families of victims, "including those involved in relief operations or associated in response activities, subject to certification regarding the cause of death from the appropriate authority."
India is reporting more than 80 cases of the coronavirus disease, which first emerged in China late last year but has spread far enough to be considered a pandemic. Two people have died in Karnataka and Delhi.
The virus has killed over 5,000 and sickened more than 138,000 across the globe, according to a Reuters count.
There is currently no vaccine or special anti-viral treatment for Covid-19, but supportive care can help most patients recover, according to WHO.
Precautionary measures include regular hand-washing with alcohol-based rub or soap and water, abstaining from touching one's face, and social distancing.
