Govt extends due date for filing of ITR till January 10

The government on Wednesday extended the due date for filing income tax returns for the 2019-20 fiscal to January 10 from December 31, 2020,

The deadline for companies and individuals who need to get their accounts audited too has been extended by 15 days till February 15, the finance ministry said in a statement.

Informing about the development, the income tax department under the Finance Ministry, tweeted, "In view of the continued challenges faced by taxpayers in meeting statutory compliances due to outbreak of COVID-19, the government further extends the dates for various compliances."

The due date for filing income tax returns (ITR) by individuals and companies was December 31, 2020, and January 31, 2021, respectively.

Usually, the last date to file income tax returns is July 31 of every year. This the second time the deadline for filing income tax returns has been extended. The first extension was from July 31 to December 31.

The due date for filing of annual returns under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, for the financial year 2019-20 has also been extended to February 28.
