Delhi Polls : Shaheen Bagh goes to vote with heavy security

Along with the rest of Delhi, Shaheen Bagh is also voting in the Delhi assembly elections on Saturday. Shaheen Bagh has been the epicentre of the anti-CAA uprising where protests have been going on for more than 55 days.

Shaheen Bagh falls in the Okhla constituency and is a minority-dominated area. With the election campaign being polarised with debate centred around Shaheen Bagh, the centre of massive protests has become a flashpoint between AAP, BJP and Congress.

AAP's Amanatullah Khan is the sitting MLA in this area and also the 2020 candidate of the party, he is up against Congress's Parvez Hashmi and BJP's Brahm Singh Bidhuri.

Ahead of the elections, incidents of gunmen opening firing also brought the spotlight back on Shaheen Bagh which forced Election Commission to shift DCP south-east Chinmay Biswal.

In the wake of Delhi elections, the Election Commission has marked 5 polling centres of Shaheen Bagh as highly sensitive. Forty booths under these polling centres are in the critical category, which means special security arrangements have been made for them.

"We are constantly in touch with the protesters and making all efforts to make people vote fearlessly. We have deployed extra security at Shaheen Bagh polling stations. Along with Delhi Police personnel, paramilitary forces and homeguards will also ensure safety and security of the voters," said RP Meena, DCP south-east.

He added, 'During polling, extra patrolling will be observed in and outside the area. To ensure safety we have also deployed extra PCRs. Even CCTVs are being installed to track ill elements."
