Delhi: Drunk cop hits 60-year-old with car, runs over her to escape; arrested
A 60-year-old woman was gravely injured after a policeman hit her with his car and ran over her in a narrow lane of Chilla Village, East Delhi. The accused, identified as a Delhi Police Sub-inspector posted with the PCR, has been arrested. The woman is undergoing treatment for her injuries at a hospital in Delhi.
The incident took place on Friday in Chilla Village near Ghazipur area of Delhi.
Police have said that the officer, identified as 56-year-old Yogendra, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident which was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the area.
The footage of the incident shows the woman falling off the bonnet of the speeding car after being knocked down by the drunk driver. A man in the video can be seen signaling the driver to stop while the passers-by tried to lift the woman from under the vehicle.
The drunk driver, however, in an attempt to escape, accelerated the car and ran over her, dragging the woman's body a few meters. The passers-by, however, managed to stop the vehicle.
The accused driver has been arrested.
Speaking to a news agency, police said, "The accused is a Sub-Inspector; he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He has been arrested. Injured is undergoing treatment at the hospital."
