COVID-19: Google employees to work from home until July 2021
With the coronavirus pandemic refusing to slow down, Google has some new working plans for its employees. A report claims that Google is planning to make its 200,000 full-time and contract employees work remotely until July 2021. Apart from Google, many other tech companies have resorted to working from home for their employees but Google is the only company so far that is planning an extension.
As per a Wall Street Journal report, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has spoken with top executives about the same. Pichai had then sent a mail to his employees announcing the new work from home plan. “To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021, for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” the email obtained by The Verge read.
Google earlier had plans to reopen some of its offices for employees by July 6, 2020 things didn’t happen as planned as Google has now extended the joining date till July 2021.
Earlier, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had announced that it would allow many of its employees to work from home permanently. He also predicted that most of its new hires at its headquarter will work from home.
Talking about Facebook’s work from home plans, Zuckerberg had told The Verge, “We’re going to allow people to request to be a permanent remote worker at some point. And they don’t have to make that decision right now, obviously. We already announced that people can remotely work through the end of 2020 if they want. And if COVID is still prevalent, it’s possible that that extends beyond that. But on a long-term basis, we’re going to let people request to work permanently remotely. We’re going to focus on experienced employees rather than new college grads, who I think need to be in the office more, for training.
Earlier in May, Twitter had also allowed its employees to work from home. said that it won’t open its offices before September and when it does, it wouldn’t rush into things or go back to how things were before the lockdown. Bouncing back to work will be careful and intentional.
“We were uniquely positioned to respond quickly and allow folks to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere. The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen. If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return,” Jennifer Christie, Vice President, People, Twitter had said in a statement.
