India cases rise to 20,080; Maharashtra total at 5,218
Coronavirus cases in India jumped close to 20,000 with the biggest increase in the number of deaths in a day linked to the highly infectious virus. 50 patients died in the last 24 hours. While 19,984 cases have been reported in the country so far, an improvement has been recorded since yesterday in the recovery rate, which indicates the number of people who have successfully fought off the illness, the government data shows. The recovery rate stood at 19.36 percent this morning, with 618 patients recovering in a day.
On Tuesday evening, the Uttar Pradesh government said the border between Delhi and Noida has been sealed as a preventive measure. While Delhi is the third worst-hit state with over 2,000 coronavirus cases, Gautam Buddh Nagar, under which Noida falls, is one of the worst-hit districts with nearly 100 cases.
Worldwide, more than 25 lakh people have coronavirus, over 17.04 lakh people have died. The coronavirus death toll in the United States- the country with the most fatalities in the pandemic -- has climbed by 2,751 in the past 24 hours, the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University showed.
